“Stay Woke became a watch word in parts of the black community for those who were self-aware, questioning the dominant paradigm and striving for something better.”. With the dominant paradigm being White supremacy, Badu’s poetry speaks to how Blacks must stay vigilant through the obstacles White supremacy throws at them. Stay Woke and Woke did became more popular in 2014, immediately following the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, however, the phrase took on a deeper meaning. For Whites, Stay Woke became an awareness of their White Privilege in addition to unconscious fears of Black people as an symptom of systematic White supremacy propaganda. For Blacks, Stay Woke became an awareness of White supremacy and the lengths the system will go to subjugate Blacks and keep the status quo. This change in consciousness has become a departure from an European to an Afrocentric world view.
