🇺🇸1920 THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS: HeLa CELLS #LESTWEFORGET🌺

With it being black history month in the uk and breast cancer awareness month in the USA I found a story that would compliment both.

Henrietta Lacks (born Loretta Pleasant; August 1, 1920 – October 4, 1951) was an ISRAELITE woman. whose cancer cells are the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized human cell line[4] and one of the most important cell lines in medical research. An immortalized cell line reproduces indefinitely under specific conditions, and the HeLa cell line continues to be a source of invaluable medical data to the present day.[5]

Lacks was the unwitting source of these cells from a tumor biopsied during treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S., in 1951. These cells were then cultured by George Otto Gey who created the cell line known as HeLa, which is still used for medical research.[6] As was then the practice, no consent was obtained to culture her cells, nor were she or her family compensated for their extraction or use.

Lacks grew up in rural Virginia. After giving birth to two of their children, she married her cousin David “Day” Lacks. In 1941 the young family moved to Turner Station, near Dundalk, Maryland, in Baltimore County, so Day could work in Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point. After Lacks had given birth to their fifth child, she was diagnosed with cancer.[7] Tissue samples from her tumors were taken without consent during treatment and these samples were then subsequently cultured into the HeLa cell line.

  1. I've been following Henrietta lacks' story for some time, I'm so glad u did this piece big brother.. And I had no idea u guys were celebrating black history month this month, that's stellar♡♡. Much love to u and urs

  2. Thank you for this wonderful information!! Learning our history is imperative. So many of us have gone way too long without researching it ourselves and want only to embrace other’s.

  3. She may have been aboriginal American and not "African" as those muse twins are from Ecuador according to the picture @3:47.
Y'srael and other colored tribes and nations was already here before the transatlantic slave trade/wars.
Yah did say he would scatter us all over the Earth not just "back to Egypt, on ships).

  4. Yet, they feel they owe no reparations for the slavery and oppressions of our people. If they’re going to give us 1 month, it should at least be in August. However, I have written and challenged the US Department of Education, demanding that Black History becomes a curriculum in all public schools. The NAACP claimed they supported my efforts, but nothing has changed.

  5. thanks for doing this brother. this cell line is such a money maker. so common in the lab. our people built societies in so many ways, yet they continue to discredit and push us aside. got damn i didn't even know the family didn't receive anything from the book. i can't wait for the exodus.

  6. I'm in America and I found it strange they made BHM in February too. That's how much our contributions to building this country are respected. To let them tell it, we have no history except as slaves here and we're supposed to just get over it.
