The colonel believes that the best alternative is Ukraine to become a "non-aligned state" between the east and the west. I think this is utterly naïve. If no measures are taken, Russia will swallow Ukraine (perhaps by destroying it entirely). Ukraine needs protection, perhaps not by a full NATO membership, but there must be some sort of protective alliance. The colonel may be an excellent military, but he does not have a clue of international politics.

My belief is that if the front at Bakhmut can be stabilized, the Ukrainians should not mount a counter offensive, but instead negotiate for peace, and the US should make them do this. Sometimes I wonder what happened to Thomas Jefferson's warning about those foreign entanglements.
