Easy question to answer. Confiscating a robbers car keys so that he can't get away is not stealing the keys, and it is the right thing to do. You're not taking the keys to claim it as your property and you're not selling it to make a profit. You are stopping a crime. You will give the keys to the police. And after he serves his punishment, the robber gets his keys back.

I also wanted to comment concerning Laban the Uncle. Laban didn't just get shady when it came to Jacob. He had shady motives when it came to his sister Rebecca as well. If anyone is familiar with the History of the search for Isaac's, wife via Abraham's servant. Leban and their mother wanted to keep Rebecca, with them for ten days, after they had been given all the gifts, more or less she had been given the most expensive gifts. But the servant of Abraham, insisted that she go away with them that same day. It was also Rebecca, who encouraged Jacob, to deceive his father. So the spirit of deception seem to run deep on the mother side of the family. Make one wonder why, the maternal side is so Highly regarded in certain deceptive religions. 🤔 When everyone knows that it's the male that plants the seed, and the female is the incubator. After laban saw jacob didnt have the idols he knew the only other ones with access freely to his tent or special place with images would be his DAUGHTERS.
So its basically him realizing jacob will kill one of his daughters if he keeps searching, so he copped out and said instead of agreeing to jacobs statement, he said make a covenant with me to nullify that statement as the covenant trumps a free statement in biblical law.
He made sure if the idols were eventually found jacob may abuse, sell one of the daughters into prostitution or take another wife and neglect her (as rachel already felt).
It was laban making a loophole for his daughters as jacob was already known to not be attentive properly to rachel and that stunt would surely cost her potentially her life or any attention he did give her.
