"Mormon Transhumanism" by Lincoln Cannon

At the Transhuman Visions conference on religion and Transhumanism, fourteen speakers from different faiths and positions (Islam, Raelism, Lutheran, Mormon, Catholic, Seventh Day Adventist, Buddhist, Wicca, Urantia, Terasem, Atheism, Agnosticism) discussed the similarities and differences between religion and Transhumanism.

  1. Your discussion of the simulation argument and the growth of technology going into the future seems rational.  But then you mix-up this discussion as having something to do with a person named "Jesus Christ", which I don't see as having any rational bearing.

  2. I commenting here not for weezlBPro's sake but rather for anyone else who might be reading, as I find his comments contradictory and frankly nonsensical. God certainly does not need our technology, but instead we may use technology to aspire to be like him. After all, we take for granted that things like music, the written word, and even language, though ancient, are also "man-made" technologies–each them potentially bringing us closer together and to God.

  3. Lincoln Cannon is a great thinker and writer. And can be considered a man on the move in truth and does well in explaining the modern Mormon, and Transhumanism. The Basic starting point and building of Mormonism, is to Believe in Jesus Christ.. Then as all faiths/doctrines of Jesus, from there we must all look for the truth of the Word.. Following Jesus will bring anyone to truth, but many faiths detour into near oblivion with their doctrines.. Joseph Smith did all he could through revelation to bring forth truth.. So, one cannot deny him as a believer in Christ.. And through my examination of him, know and realize that Joseph was in a spiritual battle against ignorance, and he was as John the revealer. He was seeing visions, and had to interpret his visions as best he could. And these visions were of a divine nature.. As far as for transhumanism… Ageing now ends, which will causes technology to explode into a new society, for those who believe in Jesus Christ of all us saints.. 4. The Mormon religion split from Christianity, and it claims to have "another gospel" of Jesus Christ, plus it adds a third book to the King James Bible, tacking this new book onto the end of the Book of Revelation. This new gospel was allegedly delivered to Joe Smith by an angel from heaven, named Moroni. Mormons, tragically, have overlooked the following verses in the 1611 KJV:

Galatians 1:6-8  "I marvel that ye are so soon removed unto another gospel: which is not another. There be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed."

Revelation 22:18  "I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book."

And yet the Mormon religion today claims to have 15 million members! How can 15 million people believe in an empty religion that is provably false, being debunked word-for-word by its own founding documents? The answer is supernatural. Just like hackers steal your personal information in ways that are invisible to your eyes, and kidnappers steal children right out from under their loving parents' noses, wolves and demons steal souls. And the enemies of Christ know that they can keep any human being spiritually blinded and helplessly vulnerable to spiritual deception by causing him or her to do two things: (1) believe false doctrine, and (2) live sinful lifestyles. Welcome to Hollywood. Welcome to Babylon. That is their ubiquitous two-step formula for success; by which they win wealth and prestige in exchange for feeding your soul into Satan's "Jaws" (Spielberg's pun intended).

    Genesis 3:1, 4-5

[1] Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said ___? [Fill in the blank with any Biblical doctrine].

[2] And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye ______ [Fill in the blank with any sin and / or false doctrine], then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods.

    John 10:1

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

    1 John 2:19

They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

By infecting humans with false doctrine and seducing us to worship false gods or idols, that is, by seducing us to "heed" sinful temptations or heretical doctrines while "expecting to receive" blessings thereby, God's enemies have the perfect formula for spiritual abduction of his sheep. The Serpent's two-part recipe was first served to mankind in the Garden of Eden, and since then the Devil has never needed to change it, because the trick works every time. Be aware that sin need not be lascivious in order to be deadly; sin can be polite and orderly but nevertheless fatal. For example, the Seventh Day Adventists have gone utterly astray by teaching that the observance of the Saturday sabbath is mandatory. The KJV debunks them too:

    Romans 14:5-6, 17-18

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.

For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost: and whosoever serveth Christ in these things is acceptable to God, and approved of men.

    Colossians 2:16-17, 20

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: which are [merely] a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. So if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why then should ye be subject to ordinances, as if you are still living in the world?

It is not only miraculous that entire denominations grow up around doctrines that are directly contradicted by scripture, but it is also proof that the King James Bible is divinely inspired when it contains perfect refutations of every newsworthy cult and popular heresy that has arisen since 1611, after the KJV was published. God, by his foreknowledge, inspired his apostles and prophets to give us one Bible that contains all of the data that we need, and he also inspired the translators of the King James Version to choose their words just right. So then, what about Penetecostalism, which teaches that every Christian must speak in tongues?

    1 Corinthians 12:6-11

There are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal: for to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge; to another faith; to another the gifts of healing; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

    1 Corinthians 14:5, 1-4

I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaketh with tongues.

[To prophesy is to teach about the inspired meanings in God's word, and to speak God's words from the Bible appropriately when they are called for by a given set of circumstances; to prophesy does not strictly mean to see the future, for that power can also come by different gifts of the Spirit, such as by "word of knowledge"].

Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

But he that prophesies speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifies himself; but he that prophesies edifies the church.

What about the Roman Catholic Church with its ostentatious corporate structure and its idolatrous sacramentalism, and its pope who claims to stand in the place of Christ on earth?

    Matthew 23:9

Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

    Matthew 16:6; 15:9; 16:12

Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Then the disciples understood him: that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine [leavened doctrine; doctrine that has been mixed with words and concepts that are not from the real Bible].

    Mark 7:8-9, 13

For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition; making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

What about the word-faith movement, positive confession, yoga and new age mysticism, circle-making, and all other forms of spiritism and witchcraft?

    Galatians 4:8-11

When ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

And ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. I am afraid for you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

    Matthew 12:34, 36

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things?

I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

And what about the perfectly backwards "Health & Wealth" doctrine that teaches Christians to expect to live their "best lives now," that Christ wants them to be rich, and free from tribulation, pain, and loss? Turn to almost any page in the New Testament and you will find the opposite being taught.

    Mark 10:25

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

    James 1:2-4

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations [trials and tribulations]; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

    2 Thessalonians 1:4-5

We ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer.

    Matthew 5:10-12

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

    Matthew 24:9, 11; 10:38

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

  5. Great presentation, but I think your definition of Grace is inadequate and based on you own personal interpretation. Given the emphasis on obedience and, to use your term, immersive discipleship (perhaps what Hugh Nibley called "maximum participation"), and the promise to receive all that the father has, I would suggest that Grace comes comes in the form of being permitted to repent and be forgiven of our sins seventy times seven until we reach our maximum potential, whether it be that perfect, godlike state, or otherwise. It is not tied to our opportunity to do good works, but rather our commitment to endure. It serves the bigger picture of what was supposed to be an open, progressive, non-sectarian, living religion without creed or dogma. The underlying assumption being that humans are inherently good, not bad (as some religions suggest), and that they can learn to become Saviors of themselves through Jesus. Perhaps I would accept if someone said that Mormon Grace is the opportunity for endless works, but to say it is merely the opportunity to work grossly misrepresents the religion.
