Should we edit our DNA? An imagined future of gene editing

There are decisions being made right now that could have an effect on global populations for generations to come. As part of this project, we commissioned an artist to investigate some of the themes raised in the podcasts. This work of fiction imagines a future where gene editing has become mainstream and discusses the moral, ethical and political divides that this might create

  1. Did you have the script checked at all by anyone who knew anything about the topic at hand? It's pretty obvious that the author has no idea what they're talking about.

  2. "if man knows something exists he reaches for it like it's damn near instinctive"

    That and

"I think we're overlooking something fundamental we don't understand"

  3. And then you pretend we need genetic adjustments for global warming. Humans have lived everywhere between -20 and +40°C. This is so bad. How can you commission someone so obviously scientifically illiterate write science fiction?

  4. The arrogance of the scientific community is astonishing. We're still evolving and who knows the potential we have and these quacks think they can do a better job. Disgusting.

  7. The Guardian is now moderating (i.e. deleting ) comments from the left. So for what or for whom is this news outlet that is pushing left wingers away?
On the topic… Seven Generations you are completely right.

  8. Great storytelling. And an enjoyable conversation started to discuss where this technology may lead. CRISPR is here today. Where may it lead humanity in the future? We’re allowed to dress, tattoo, pierce, surgically & chemically enhance and otherwise adorn ourselves today. DIY at-home CRISPR will allow us to play with our genetics.

  9. 'we' are already editing our dna since the mechanised chemical intensive farming practice is causing generational damage to our dna.
It is an ongoing disaster no politian wishes to address.

  10. For too long, the human race has ceased to improve itself by evolution.
For thousands, nay, millions of years, simply reproducing was an absolute gauntlet beset by the fiercest of strife, from which only the strongest, luckiest and most adapted passed on their genes.

Nowadays, even the weakest, most health-cursed of us are kept alive and breeding. It may seem compassionate, but it's robbing us of our strength slowly and surely.
Gene editing may yet give this power back to us, both safely and humanely.

  11. NO WAY editing people thats CRAZY!! lets sit here dying of diseases, and suffering missing parts at birth for a half dozen centuries then become extinct due to some environmental factor
