Why did the US give up the Panama Canal? (Short Animated Documentary)

In 1977 Jimmy Carter agreed to the United States returning the Panama Canal back to Panama by 2000. He agreed to the transfer in return for nothing. So why did he do this? Why did the USA return the Panama canal for free?

  1. Thanks for your video. However, this video makes it look as if the devolution of the Panama Canal to Panama was only possible because the United States wanted so, underestimating the negotiation skills of Panamanian diplomats and the international lobby made. Moreover, though there are several reasons, the real one is 9 January 1964. Look for it and then we can discuss this topic with a new perspective.

  2. Nothing was for free…
Panama has always ceded its greatest resource, its geographical position, for the benefit of others, for centuries.
First for the Spanish Empire, then for the Yankee Empire, and now for the world economy.
In addition, many natives and immigrants from the Antilles died in the construction of the Canal and the railway, more than 20,000 people. It is time that part of that benefit also reaches the locals.
Jimmy Carter will be remembered as the US President who did the right thing…

  3. Why do you call the USA, America? Panama as well as the US are in America.
I know it's a sort of nickname for your country but your title would like asking "why did Europe leave France?" It's nonsense.

  4. We built it, we bought it, it's ours and it should've stayed ours. Carter was a MENSA member but not a good statesman and giving up the canal was just one of his many blunders. So glad he's gone…

  5. The US government defends the territorial integrity of Ukraine and Georgia(Sakartvelo), but it was they who destroyed the territorial integrity of Mexico, Yugoslavia and Colombia.

They have a lot to apologize for.

  6. Man, that Jimmy Carter guy was one shrewd negotiator. You should do a video on him. A president with such a deft hand must have oversaw significant economic growth during his tenure.
    Oh, wait, no: Malaise/Incompetence/Stagflation

  7. Whattttt???? Panama is still in America as far as I know. The proper name of the whole continent is AMERICA. Everybody living in this continent is AMERICAN. You have to learn to use the proper names. The name of this country is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Not just “America”.

  8. Rarely mentions: "Geographically, the oceans that Panama Canal connects with are not at the same level; the Pacific Ocean lies a little higher than the Atlantic Ocean. This difference in the sea level requires ships to get up over the terrain of Panama- up to 26 meters above sea level- in order to reach the other end of the canal"
How many projects have the French started that the U.S. stepped in to fix?
Actually, did the People of "Panama" WANT freedom or did the U.S. cause it to gain "Free" Land?

  9. History is so full self dealing, underhandedness, And general corruption that when an honest guy like Carter comes along and just does the right because its the right thing to do it invokes suspicious pops up and the question why is asked.

  10. Quite a number of American and Canadian retirees living in Panama, The government is stable, the American military is backup, they use the US dollar as their currency, the cost of living is lower than the US, there are beautiful coastal and mountain environments. The canal provides economic stability to the country.

  11. Why did the US instigate a revolution to create Panama and steal the land from Colombia? We will only mention the USMarines in Central America and the United Fruit Company. Any wonder why no one trusts the US.

  12. Another great benefit of ditching control of the canal is that the United States was no longer responsible for the cost of upkeep. Panama would do as the US and pass the operating cost on to customers but the US was free of the responsibility.

  13. I love how the narrator didn't mention the campaing for the Panama Canal, the voting on the UN or the diplomatic meetings about it and the congress decision on favor of it. Erroneously portraying it as just a Jimmy Carter decision.
