When the USA fought in South Vietnam, it used the help of its allies to try to win the war. But when the USSR did the same in Afghanistan, there was no such call. So why not? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

All in all, the Soviets did better than NATO in Afghanistan. They weren't defeated, and left a reasonably stable government in control of the cities that lasted 3 years, and could have lasted more if Yeltsin hadn't cut off military aid…

Well, it really wasn't an invasion of Afghanistan was it? Afghanistan had a King, then it had a coup that transformed it into a republic, then that president got coup'd by their communist party, then other people rebelled against the communsit party, then their communist party asked for help from the USSR which promptly gave so, and the US along the way funded islamic terrorism to undermine soviet expansion and gave us the worst possible situation for the present day, with a country that breeds terrorism like there's no tomorrow
I think that the USSR avoided bringing the intervention in Afghanistan into the discussion of the Warsaw Pact because it would have met opposition. Romania would certainly have opposed it as it did to the intervention in Czechoslovakia in 1968.

It was like the opposite of the Ukraine situation. Ukraine seems to have all of the men it needs, it's the equipment that makes the difference when it comes to foreign aid. Speaking of Afghanistan, I suppose the US wants to show that its support makes a real difference when the people of the country it's supporting actually have the will to fight.
