If it was claimed by any other country rather than Denmark, the UK most certainly would have annexed the Greenland. And the other super powers being discouraged from their temptation because the UK will always side with the Danish to provide protection against the bad boys.

Well it is not exactly an ownership but a part of the kingdom of Denmark with self autonomy. Owning something means you can do anything with you want with it. This is not how it works here. The people of Greenland has a say. There has been many ups and downs between the population of Greenland and Denmark throughout history, however, today it would appear today that the population of Greenland prefer to be in the kingdom of Denmark as opposed to elsewhere, including the US. Being a small area population wise with vast resources it i very difficult to be independent without large pr powers abusing you. Under organized Denmark and of course the umbrella of NATO Greenland lies well with Denmark currently as China has tried to enter and influence the Arctic while particularity Russia, but also the US and Canada have large arctic coast lines.
