Monaco is a minuscule nation that exists nuzzled into the southern coast of France. It has been around since the thirteenth century and spent that time as either a Genoese, French, Spanish or Sardinian puppet. Despite this, it managed to survive to this day. Usually the answers for "Why small countries continue stay independent" are similar. So I am thinking in another question: "What small countries that existed before and were annexed? And why they were annexed and the other weren't?"
